Marie Derome

Child and adolescent psychotherapist with a special interest in parent-baby relationships

I strongly believe in early intervention and I specialise in supporting parents who are struggling to bond with their babies. These kinds of struggles can be due to a traumatic birth, an early separation, parents’ own difficult childhood, past trauma, a bereavement…

In exploring some of these issues in a calm and safe space, I can support parents to understand their baby’s needs, and to develop ways of communication which will help them create a secure attachment. This is important for the baby’s long-term healthy emotional, physical and cognitive development.

If parents have been distressed or traumatised by the birth experience, then it is very likely that their baby has been too. Therefore it is important that both parents and baby get a chance to “tell their story” to each other so that all together we can try to make sense of everybody’s experience. Five or six sessions is often enough for parents to feel that the shadow of the traumatic birth is no longer getting in the way of enjoying their baby.

My clinic is outside Honiton (East Devon), in a very peaceful and easily accessible location with plenty of space to park.

I am a full member of the Association of Child Psychotherapists (ACP).

I also offer VIG (Video Interactive Guidance).

If you would like to set up an initial consultation to consider together if the therapeutic support I offer may be able to help you move forward, please get in touch.
