Gemma Luther

BA(Hons) Dip. MBACP (Accred) Counsellor working with individuals and couple

Pregnancy-related trauma can be devastating, not helped by the lack of acknowledgement in the healthcare system and generally.  This can leave new parents trying to cope with complex grief and/or PTSD while feeling isolated and unsupported.

As part of my studies, I carried out research into the causes of birth trauma and considered the psychological impact. My motivation for choosing this subject for my research was my own traumatic birth experience some years ago. I believe it can have a devastating effect on confidence in parenting and a massive impact on subsequent life choices.

Whilst I have my own feelings around it, I understand that every person’s experience is different and I am considerate of this.  Given the sensitive nature of this subject, I find myself drawn to wanting to support new parents affected by birth trauma so that they can come to terms with their birth experience, helping them to recover and enjoy life with their baby.

You can find out more about the way I work from my profiles on the Counselling Directory and the BACP Therapist Directory.  I am currently working face to face, online and on the telephone.
